If you are a minor, you must hold an instruction permit for at least nine months, complete a driver’s education course, and amass a minimum of 50 hours of supervised driving before you may qualify for a license. Your permit will cost $20 at your local SOS office, and your driver’s license fee will range from $2-30 depending on your age. In addition to passing the knowledge test, you’ll also need to pass a vision test and prove you either have completed or are enrolled in a driver’s education course, if you’re under 18. You’ll need to answer a minimum of 28 of the questions correctly to pass and receive your instruction permit. The manual is extensive and consists of 13 chapters covering topics ranging from safe driving rules for the road to traffic signals and road signs to crash prevention. The Illinois written knowledge test consists of 35 multiple-choice questions based on information that can be found in the 2023 Illinois Rules of the Road.
